Homework for this week and half term:

Please could you practice last weeks spellings again - the rule of silent 'c', the children struggled most with this.

Maths:

Mathlectics (Fractions is assigned)

Some fun activities to do outside of Mathletics:

Activity 1: Fraction Pizza Party 🍕

Objective: Recognise and create fractions.

Materials: Paper, markers, scissors.

Instructions:

  1. Draw a large circle (representing a pizza) on a piece of paper.

  2. Divide the pizza into different fractions (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). You can do this by cutting the circle into equal parts with scissors.

  3. Colour in different parts of the pizza to show the fractions.

  4. Ask the child to write the fraction for each section. Example: "How much of the pizza is red?" (Answer: 1/4 if you colour one-quarter red).

Extension: Have them write a short sentence using the fractions: "I ate 1/2 of my pizza."

Activity 2: Fraction Hunt 🏃‍♀️

Objective: Identify fractions in everyday objects.

Instructions:

  1. Create a list of everyday items that can be split into fractions (e.g., apple, chocolate bar, sandwich, a pencil or even a book).

  2. Ask the children to find these items around the house and draw pictures of them.

  3. Then, ask the child to divide each object into equal parts and write the fraction. For example:

    • If they find a chocolate bar, they can break it into 4 pieces and show 1/4 or 3/4 depending on how many pieces are eaten or left.

Activity 3: Fraction Art 🎨

Objective: Recognise fractions visually.

Materials: Coloured paper, scissors, glue.

Instructions:

  1. Cut out different shapes (like circles, rectangles, and triangles) from coloured paper.

  2. Ask the child to fold or cut each shape into equal parts, like 1/2, 1/4, or 1/3.

  3. Glue the shapes on a larger piece of paper and label the fractions. For example, a circle cut into 4 parts would be labeled 1/4.

Extension: Ask the child to make their own fraction "art gallery" and explain the fractions to a family member.

Activity 4: Fraction Number Line 🚶‍♂️

Objective: Understand fractions on a number line.

Materials: A strip of paper or ruler, markers.

Instructions:

  1. Draw a number line from 0 to 1 on a piece of paper.

  2. Ask the child to divide the line into equal parts (halves, quarters, etc.).

  3. Have them mark fractions on the number line: 1/2, 1/4, 3/4.

  4. Ask the child to colour or write the fraction above the correct point on the number line.

Extension: Make it more fun by turning it into a game. Say a fraction (like "1/2") and the child has to jump to the correct spot on the number line!

Things to practice over half term:

  • Spellings
  • Previous Math topics
  • Handwriting!
